On-demand insurance platform Trov has announced a partnership to deliver trip insurance for passengers of Waymo’s forthcoming self-driving ride-hailing service.
Waymo, formerly Google’s Self-Driving Car Project, announced plans in November to launch a commercial ride-hailing service in Phoenix, Arizona using its fully self-driving vehicle fleet.
As self-driving cars begin to enable new forms of shared transportation, insurers and brokers such as Trov are exploring opportunities for new trip-based insurance models.
Trov will provide trip insurance customised for Waymo’s ride-hailing passengers. Coverage will include a number of protections, including lost property, trip interruption benefits and medical expense reimbursement.
“This partnership highlights the convergence of the future of transportation with the future of insurance,” said Trov Founder and CEO Scott Walchek.
“Waymo is making personal transportation more effortless, and so it follows that all associated aspects of a journey - including insurance - should be equally painless, with passengers’ safety and peace of mind paramount.”
“Innovative technology needs innovative partners,” said Waymo’s Director of Operations Shaun Stewart. “Trov is pioneering a cutting-edge approach to insurance that's ideal for ride-sharing because it’s customized for every trip.”
