Toyota to invest in automated driving AI technologies

Carmaker Toyota today announced an additional investment of 10.5 billion yen in Japan-based deep learning firm Preferred Networks, with the aim of accelerating joint research and development into artificial intelligence technologies in mobility-related fields, such as automated driving technology.

The two companies have been collaborating on joint research and development since 2014, and Toyota invested approximately 1 billion yen in Preferred Networks in 2015.

Toyota said that Preferred Networks’ intelligence-related technologies (including machine learning, deep learning and big data processing) are essential to its business, as it researches and develops automated driving technologies that it expects to “significantly affect the nature of mobility”.
