Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed a memorandum of understanding with HERE Technologies on a long-term technology collaboration that aims to map the city with high-definition technology.
HD maps are required to help Dubai towards its goal of converting 25% of public transport services to driverless means by 2030.
The partners plan to conduct a number of pilots aimed at using HERE’s high-definition map for autonomous cars, HD Live Map, for public service vehicles operating in Dubai. The self-updating map is designed to provide vehicles with accurate information about what is happening on the road.
RTA and HERE will also focus on using HERE’s Open Location Platform to intelligently connect vehicles with each other, as well as with the surrounding road infrastructure.
The partners plan to use the new technologies in joint pilots as part of the city’s preparations to deploy self-driving vehicles at EXPO 2020, which Dubai is hosting.
“Dubai recognizes the importance of new location technologies in making transportation more efficient, safer and sustainable for people,” said Leon van de Pas, SVP, Internet of Things at HERE Technologies.
“Driven by our vision of enabling an autonomous world for everyone, the HERE Technologies team is excited and energized to help Dubai deliver on its ambition plans for a driverless future.”
